I collected the Fazer on Saturday 22nd July I had arranged insurance through Yamaha and it came to my notice that the insurance company insisted that the Fazer was "DataTagged". This involves placing transponders in various parts  of the bike including, wheels, engine, frame, fuel tank and seat! These are embedded in epoxy and placed inside the bike's bits. There are also microdots suspended in fluorescent paint (invisible to the naked eye) painted onto various parts. The Police can "read" these transponders with a gizmo they have and the number is registered to me. Not much of a deterrent to an opportunist thief who just wants to joy ride and hammer the living daylights out of the bike. I'm not sure I would want it back after that.

The Fazer is a very different animal to both the scooters and the ER5. Its engine is so quick to respond that during the running in period it is a nightmare to keep below 5,000rpm. This is the limit for the first 600mls and is 60mph, for between 600 - 1,000mls the limit is 6,000rpm 72mph. This is where I am at the moment.

The riding position is not bad. It is not as straight up as many tourers but neither are you stretched across the tank attempting to reach the bars. My wrists had to get used to having more weight on them after riding the scooters and the ER5. I do find however I need regular stops to "loosen up".

The engine/gearbox scream like a demented banshee even at these revs. What it will sound like at 11,000rpm is anyone's guess. Once on the move the wind noise drowns out all sound of the bike, this makes changing down and matching revs a little difficult as you only need to breathe on the throttle and it revs quite high so matching the next gear without hearing the engine takes some mastering (I don't think I have yet).

I find the gearchange  not so easy as the ER5 as the travel is quite long and going from 1st to 2nd has produced neutral on more than one occasion. The box is also quite "clunky" below 3rd gear going up or down.

Inside the cockpit there is a rev counter, speedo with 2 trip meters and a clock (only display one at a time), fuel gauge and the usual idiot lights.

There are hazard warning lights on the bike which I think is unusual.
